Company Mission

The SDSM&T Casting Co. mission is to enhance the public knowledge of fossils and paleontology through the use of replicas in exhibits, educational outreach, and by making it possible for the public to own part of the science without detracting from it.  This company supports education for the public and for SDSM&T paleontology students.

The SDSM&T Casting Company offers a wide range of services in the replication of fossil materials.  Every piece is hand poured, trimmed, and hand painted to match teh original specimen, or the customer's specifications.  All pieces are made to order. 

Replicas available for direct purchase include a wide selection from the SDSM&T paleontology collections.  This ranges from the earliest invetebrate life up through Pleistocene mammals.  We specialize in replica skulls and full skeletal mounts of White River Badlands fauna.  These are actual-size, and can substitute for the original specimen in research purposes.

Replica casts are available in the following casting mediums.  These casting mediums provide various standards of durability, weight, and price.

     Plaster

     Fiberglass-reinforced plaster

     Gypsum cement

     Epoxy resin

     Epoxy resin shell with urethane foam interior

All replicas are hand painted using artist-quality acrylics, resistant to wear and fading.  They are sealed with a variety of finishes to achieve a specific effect.  The SDSM&T Casting Company prides itself on the ability to duplicate the exact texture and appearance of original specimens, including the iridescent gleam of an ammonite or the pitted bones of a crocodile skull.

We have the ability to produce replicas of tiny mammal teeth all teh way up to full skeletal mounts in size and complexity.

Custom orders expand the range of our products outside the SDSM&T mold library, and into other materials from the SDSM&T paleontology collection, or specimens provided by the customer.  Let us know what you're looking for!
