Civil and Environmental Engineering - Designing a Sustainable Tomorrow

Engineers are the ultimate problem-solvers, and as a civil or environmental engineer, you’ll have the opportunity to address a wide range of challenges. From revamping our nation’s infrastructure to creating sustainable buildings and studying climate patterns, you’ll play a vital role in shaping a better future for all.

Our award-winning faculty will guide you on your journey towards success. You’ll get to work in state-of-the-art facilities and collaborate with industry professionals, gaining hands-on experience that sets you apart from the competition. Distinguishing our program from others is a focus on sustainable engineering design – providing you the tools you’ll need for tomorrow’s grand challenges.  Our program includes real-world project-based learning as well as research opportunities, giving you a head start in your career and making you more appealing to both industry and graduate schools.

Choose between civil engineering or our environmental engineering specialization- whichever path you take, you’ll be well-prepared to make a meaningful impact on society. Our graduates are highly sought-after by industry, with many receiving multiple job offers before they even graduate, thanks to the practical skills gained through internships, co-ops, research, and real-world project experiences.

Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences - Preparing for a Sustainable Tomorrow

If weather and ecology fascinate you, our Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences program may be just what you’re looking for. Weather is a crucial part of our daily lives, and studying weather patterns and hazards can lead to life-saving warnings and protecting property from damage. Long-term changes in weather also shift how we prepare and design for future damaging storms. These factors combine both impact ecosystems like streams, forests, cropland, and rangeland, impacting multiple sectors from food security to designing storm-resilient infrastructure.

Our Atmospheric & Environmental Sciences degree focuses on studying the physical, chemical, and biological processes that govern our environment. Research is central to our program, allowing you to immerse yourself from day one and enhancing your prospects for employment or graduate studies. Distinguishing our program from other schools is an emphasis on decision support. Since weather, climate, and the environment intersect across society, our goal at South Dakota Mines is to produce a “weather-&-environment-ready graduate” to make a “weather-&-environment-ready nation” who can guide stakeholders in our communities and industry to plan and prepare for the future whether it’s tomorrow or years ahead.

Within the Atmospheric & Environmental Science major, you can choose to specialize in environmental science or meteorology. No matter your chosen path, you’ll be equipped for a career that addresses the significant weather, ecological, and climate issues of our time, positively impacting our communities, nation, and world.
