About CAMP

What makes CAMP distinctive is an integrated academic affairs/student affairs approach based on voluntary, individual contributions with students organizing themselves into teams that actively encourage participation, organization, and leadership starting in the freshman year.

Academic Learning Meets Real World Challenges

CAMP actively takes the classroom experience a step further:  letting students apply their developing technical skills in real world situations that involve fundraising, planning, problem-solving and deadlines.  Students participate in international competitions where the teams test their mettle against engineering universities from around the world. A synergy results where students develop their professional and technical capabilities.

CAMP Mission

The mission of CAMP is to be a center of excellence in engineering education with a focus on multidisciplinary teaming and leadership.

CAMP Vision

Every CAMP student will demonstrate self-authorship through social and emotional intelligence and the ethical use of technical knowledge by graduation.

Individual Contributions Power Team Accomplishments

The success of CAMP is based on combining the contributions of each student with the demands of working with others. To accomplish this CAMP, recognizes the importance of critical values such as:

  • Collaboration
  • Understanding
  • Innovation
  • Responsibility

as essential in resolving conflicts, establishing goals, and completing a project. The unique element of CAMP is a focus on the process in that it is very clear that the means used to achieve a goal determines the outcome. Each team constructs a distinctive structure based on the dynamics of each member. By actively encouraging each student to fully contribute, CAMP teams have been able to develop a high level of intrinsic motivation where each student feels that he or she can make a constructive contribution while at the same time contributes to the success of others. The development of a winning engineering project could not be accomplished without developing the personal as well as the technical skills of each participating student.

CAMP Program Objectives

Professional development of the students

Provide a significant engineering experience

  • Going from the abstract to the real
  • Application of fundamentals of engineering science
  • Project Management
  • Product Design and Development

Provide a significant development experience

  • Improve Emotional Intelligence
  • Improve Teaming and Leadership
  • Promote Self-authorship in the Students by Graduation
  • Assist in meeting social outcomes of ABET

CAMP Learning Outcomes

Camp students are expected to:

  • Deepen technical understanding
  • Understand in a broader context
  • Understand and apply values-based teaming theory and capability
  • Understand and apply values-based leadership theory and capability
  • Understand and apply emotional intelligence concepts
  • Understand and apply 7 Habits concepts of Independence, Interdependence, and Continual improvement

We would like the students:

  • to be able to reflect on values, their own and others, and to shape their values in the ways they want – not just the ways someone else has led them to shape their values
  • to initiate and maintain positive learning relationships with those above, beside, and below.
  • to manage a project
  • to personally balance classroom, project, and personal life

CAMP specifically works on leadership development using Covey’s theory for the juniors and team leaders and Mastering Leadership by Anderson and Adams for the seniors using scenarios.
