About AMP

Since 2001, the South Dakota Mines AMP laboratory has been researching advanced materials processing and joining technologies like friction stir welding and laser powder deposition, and has been involved in advanced manufacturing and 3-D printing technologies since 2003.

Housed primarily in the Civil Mechanical building and the Black Hills business incubator on campus, AMP has over 6000 square feet of dedicated research and development space.

In 2010, the Advanced Materials Processing Center was renamed the Arbegast Materials Processing and Joining Laboratory, in honor of the founding director of the lab, William (Bill) Arbegast who contributed so much its current success.
